Top oral care tips relating to adult orthodontics

Does anyone you know wear clear braces for adults? Chances are good that the answer is yes since the number of adult orthodontic cases is on the rise.

Researchers believe that adults feel comfortable with orthodontic care later in life due to the innovative changes in the field and the benefits of clear braces for adults which doesn’t make them feel uncomfortable.

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, although the most ideal time to complete orthodontics is while the patient is still growing, any age is the right age for orthodonticalcare!

The benefits of clear braces became evident as growing numbers of adult patients began to pursue care. Adults were now able to improve the appearance and function of their smile without attaching the stigma of a metal mouth that most of us have.

These new aligners could be removed for eating meals and dental hygiene home care; afterwards, they could be placed back in the mouth to continue tooth movement. The result of this process was two-fold: First, patients gained confidence from teeth that looked better; second, oral health was improved through properly aligned teeth.

Tip 1: Flossing

Creating a daily flossing routine is important during orthodontic treatment. Orthodontists and hygienists may recommend interdental brushes or floss threaders to make getting in between teeth easier.

Tip 2: Brushing your teeth

Using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush are ideal for cleaning teeth with braces. Begin brushing at a 45-degree angle at the gum line using small circular motions.

Then place the toothbrush on top of the brackets, angling down to brush on top of each bracket. Finally, reposition the brush to brush the bottom of the bracket as well as the wire, angling the toothbrush up.

Tip 3: Invest in fluoride mouthwash

After brushing and flossing, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash to help prevent cavities and white spots.

Tip 4: Mouthguards

Wear a mouthguard if you play sports.

Mouthguards can protect your cheeks and lips from serious cuts and can prevent damage to your braces or orthodontic appliance if you fall down or are hit in the face.
